Dataset: Co-development of mobile phone text messages to support smokers’ quitting by switching to an e-cigarette

Dataset

Description

"Data were collected from 376 smokers, ex-smoker and vapers. But only 202 were included in our analysis. Participants were shown a series of 20 text messages from one of the seven themes (Smoking Cessation, Social and Practical Support, Identity, Preventing Lapse and Relapse, Vaping versus Smoking, Practical Vaping Tips, Health & Safety) designed for smokers who are attempting to quit smoking using an e-cigarette. For each text message, the participants had to rate each text message against 9 constructs which were divided in three sections:

Readability of the text message that was rated on a 7-point Likert scale from 7 (very) to 1 (not at all):
Clear
Understandable
Believable
Helpful

Response to text message that was rated on a 7-point Likert scale from 7 (extremely) to 1 (not at all):
Happy to receive the text message

Feelings evoked by text message that were rated on a 7-point Likert scale from 7 to 1 with higher ratings denoting negative feelings apart from the offended item which was reversed:
Positive
Offended
Enthusiastic
Interested

Data preparation and processing activities

  • Description
  • Each participant was asked to complete ratings on 20 messages but only 194 did this. We have included participants if they completed all the ratings for at least one message (N=202) but excluded those who stopped before completing at least one set as well as those who didn’t consent to participate in our study.
