I am a Senior Lecturer in the School of Law and Education within the College of Society and Professions. My teaching and research primarily focuses on criminal law, sentencing and the punishment of offenders, as well as the law of torts. I also research aspects of legal and higher education and supervise at doctoral level in this area. I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a member of the Bar of England and Wales.
My research focuses on aspects of criminal and tort law which relate to sexual offending and sexuality, as well as the use of technology in society. I previously studied at both the University of York and completed my PhD at Northumbria University, where I researched aspects of HIV disclosure on online mobile dating applications and the criminalisation of HIV transmission.
I am a member of the national executive of the Association of Law Teachers and frequently write on issues relating to legal education and the undergraduate law curriculum. I am Social Media Editor of The Law Teacher: The Inernational Journal of Legal Education, the leading journal in this area.
In addition to publications in The Law Teacher, I have published in a range of journals including Policy Reviews in Higher Education; Information and Communications Technology Law and The Journal of Criminal Law. My other publications include Criminal Law, co-authored with my colleague Alan Birbeck, and Tort Law both of which are published by CILEX Publications.
I currently convene the modules Law of Torts (Undergraduate Year 1) and Sentencing, Crime and Pubishment (Undergraduate Year 2), as well as teaching on Criminal Law (Undergraduate Year 2).
In addition, I lead LSBU's Legal and Social Policy Clinic (Undergraduate Year 3) where students gain real-world experience responding to live policy consultations.
I frequently supervise students on undergraduate and postgraduate-taught programmes, particularly in areas related to criminal law and legal theory.
