Personal profile
Overview
Catarina is a Senior Research Fellow at London South Bank University with 19 years’ experience working on funded research projects in the areas of refrigeration, food science and district heating and cooling. She is the project director for Transport, Industrial and Commercial Refrigeration (TICR), a consortium project funded by the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero. TICR is investigating GHG emissions from refrigeration and developing benchmarks, roadmaps and industry resources. Catarina was the Project Manager for GreenSCIES a 15 partner project on smart local energy systems that combine low carbon heat, power and transport. She is a fellow and a former trustee of the UK Institute of Refrigeration. Catarina is also a member of IMechE Food and Drink committee and International Institute of Refrigeration commission C2 - Food Science and Engineering.
Research Interests
Catarina has published papers and presented at over 25 conferences covering a wide range of topics from food science to refrigeration, acoustics, district heating and cooling and smart local energy systems (SLES). She is the Project Director (PI) for Transport, Industrial and Commercial Refrigeration a consortium project funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. Catarina was the Manager (Co-I) for the GreenSCIES project funded by Innovate UK. GreenSCIES developed a SLES that integrates heat (ambient loop district heating and cooling network), renewable power and low carbon mobility (electric vehicles). She won the 2021 Keneth Lightfoot medal from the Institute of Refrigeration for her work on GreenSCIES. Catarina was Co-I in the Bankenergi project, which developed an end-to-end energy-trading platform and DeltaPhi, which investigated the decarbonisation of low temperature process heat.
Catarina completed her PhD at London South Bank University in 2012, on the novel design and performance enhancement of domestic refrigerators with thermal storage. This research was awarded the Ted Perry award by the Institute of Refrigeration in 2012. She worked simultaneously in academia and the refrigeration industry from 2008 to 2018, completing an industrial CASE award PhD and two knowledge transfer partnerships (KTPs) over this period. Catarina won the 2015 Business Leader of the Future award, from Innovate UK. She led the Engineering department of Adande Refrigeration for 3 years, overseeing the design, testing and certification of the Adande products for the UK and international markets, developing award-winning products.
Catarina was the president of the International Institute of Refrigeration Careers in Refrigeration (CaRe) a working group. Since CaRe inception in 2016, Catarina has organised over 15 networking events at international conferences in Europe, Asia, the US, Canada and New Zealand.
Catarina is a Fellow and a former trustee of the Institute of Refrigeration and a member of the following IOR committees:
- Papers and Publications: carries out peer reviews of papers published in the IOR proceedings.
- SIRACH planning group: organises workshops on the topics of refrigeration, heating technology, energy storage, and end-user energy demand.
Catarina is a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Food and Drink committee since 2019 and recently joined the International Institute of Refrigeration commission C2 on Food Science and Engineering.
