I first joined LSBU as a PhD Candidate in Public Health in 2019, and I am delighted to have become a staff member in 2022.
I worked previously in open access science publishing, the NHS (in Knowledge & Library Services), and higher education. I have a BA (Hons) from the University of Oxford and a PgCert in Information Science from City, University of London, and a PhD in Public Health here at LSBU. I am the Vice President of the Health Literacy Section within the European Public Health Association (EUPHA), curator of health literacy research for the Self-Care Observatory, and Joint Lead of the School Systematic Review Board at LSBU.
I am an Early Career Researcher attached to the PHIRST South Bank Research Centre, funded by NIHR to evaluate local authority-led public health interventions. So far, I have been involved in evaluations of: an advocacy project to reduce the advertising of High Fat, Sugar and Salt foods; Lived Experience-informed community projects to reduce gambling-related harms; an exercise referral programme; a complex mental health intervention for young people; a programme to reduce serious youth violence; and a scoping review of roles across public health and urban planning.
With my other hat on (as I have a dual role), I teach public health masterclasses to prepare public health practitioners for registration with the UK Public Health Register (UKPHR). I am a UKPHR-registered Public Health Practitioner and UKPHR Assessor. I also lecture on health literacy and health promotion for Occupational Therapy students.
My research interests include critical health literacy, involving children and young people in public health research, and settings-based health promotion.
