Personal profile

Overview

I am a Senior Lecturer in the Division of Social Sciences, in the School of Law and Social Science. I specialise in modern and contemporary British history and social policy with a focus on Britain's youth, welfare and charity since 1945. I have worked on a British Academy project supporting charities and voluntary archives to preserve and use their archives. I teach various social science modules and oversee the work placement module for the Division. I consult and support charities with archiving and heritage projects, most recently Merseyside Youth Association's 130th Anniversary celebrations.

Research Interests

My research looks at youth, charity and welfare since 1945. I am interested in youth clubs and voluntary youth services, the young people that went to youth clubs, and the way the state used the youth service to try and tackle juvenile delinquency. My social policy work focuses on how state welfare supports young people into adulthood.
My other area of research is the preservation and use of the archives of charities and voluntary organisations. I consult and support charities with archives and heritage projects.
I co-chair the LSBU Inclusive Researcher Group. This group looks to make the LSBU research environment more inclusive and remove barriers to participating in research for certain groups of researchers.
