Personal profile

Overview

I am a Senior Research Fellow in the Heating and Cooling Group of the School of Engineering at London South Bank University. After 11 years in industry, I joined LSBU in 1990, where I have worked on a wide range of industry and government funded research projects, in the areas of energy, aerospace, defence, health and safety, and refrigeration engineering. My main research interests are mathematical modelling, sustainable energy systems, energy efficiency and refrigeration engineering. During the last 5 years my research has focused on data centres, refrigerated transport, waste heat recovery and district energy networks.

Research interests

I am a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Engineering. I joined LSBU in 1990 as a Research Assistant to undertake a PhD research project sponsored by British Gas to investigate the design of gas ovens using CFD. I have subsequently worked in a variety of roles at LSBU undertaking government and industry sponsored R&D projects together with part-time teaching in the areas of food, chemical, fire, building services and mechanical engineering.
My main research interests are in heat transfer, refrigeration, mathematical modelling, CFD, energy efficiency, sustainability, refrigerated transport, data centres, waste heat recovery and district energy networks. I am a member of the Heating and Cooling Group within the London Centre for Energy Engineering at LSBU, and externally I am a member of a UK working group for the development of several new ISO standards in the area of cold chain logistics. I have already contributed to the development of a BSI publicly available specification (PAS) 1018:2017 on indirect, temperature-controlled refrigerated delivery services, and an international standard ISO 23412:2020 in the same area.
I am currently working on the Delta-Phi research project to determine the potential for recovery and reuse of low and medium grade waste heat sources across the UK. This is part of the EPSRC platform grant funded Low Temperature Heat Recovery and Distribution Network Technologies (LoT-NET) project to investigate how waste heat can be recovered and incorporated into smart, thermal and electrical energy systems.
I have recently completed a Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) sponsored project to develop and apply a range of computer models to evaluate the performance of a new solar assisted heating system.
