Overview
Emeritus Professor at the School of Arts and Creative Industries, I joined the university in 1997 and was awarded my Professorship in 2014 for my leadership in Arts, Media, and Sonic Culture. I am currently a member of the Immersive Research Group and, until July 2024. My research addresses cultural technologies, immersion and remixologies, with a focus on Sonic Culture. At REF 2021, my publications were rated world-leading (4*) and internationally excellent (3*). My postgraduate research students investigate and consider issues in creative technologies, music cultures, and sound studies.
Research interests
At LSBU, I am a member of the Immersive Media Research Group. Until July 2024, I co-directed The Creative Technologies Research Centre (CTRC) with Prof Lizzie Jackson to advance research and enterprise in the areas of film, digital production, video games, sound and music. Previously, as Chair of Sonic Research Group (SRG), I brought together academic staff and postgraduate research students to engage in the concepts, cultures, creative practices and technologies of sound and music, and to nurture research in this field.
I have published extensively on electronic dance music cultures, ad on related forms of electronic music, including game music. In addition, I have coedited a collection for Bloomsbury Academic, 'DJ Culture in the Mix: Power, Technology, and Social Change in Electronic Dance Music', as well as a special issue on dub diasporas for 'Dancecult: Journal of Electronic Dance Music Culture'. In addtion, I have coedited a special issue on game music for 'GAME: The Italian Journal of Game Studies', as well as a recent special issue on game and electronic dance music synergies for 'Journal of Sound and Music in Games'. Between 2011-17, I led the editorial team of 'IASPM Journal', the open-access online journal of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM).
I am member of the Advisory Boards for 'Dancecult: Journal of Electronic Dance Music', 'IASPM Journal', 'Cambridge University Press Elements in Popular Music', and 'British Pop Archive' series at Manchester University Press. I regularly peer review publication proposals and an act as external examiner, and I was twice member of the Review Council for the AHRC.
I am a member of British Forum for Ethnomusicology (BFE); British Sociological Association (BSA); Media, Communications & Cultural Studies Association (MeCCSA); Society for the Study of Sound and Music in Games (SSSMG); as well as PRS for Music, and Authors' Licensing & Collecting Society (ALCS).
In 2004 I initiated successful course provision in music and sound design at London South Bank University. I passionately care about research-led teaching, and am Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. My graduates and postgraduate researchers successfully go on to gain careers in the creative industries, including music production, music performance, sound art, music copyright management, music marketing, music management, music technology, game development, or follow academic careers in digital technologies, industries, and humanities.
