I follow a clinical academic career; I am a Paediatric Intensive Care (PIC) nurse with 16 years’ experience at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital. My work focuses on improving the care of critically ill children through research into pain, sedation, drug withdrawal, delirium, and ventilation. These themes have shaped both my MSc (King’s College London) and PhD (Plymouth University).
I publish papers in high impact journals, I have presented at numerous National and International conferences and I am an active member of the Paediatric Critical Care Society (PCCS) the European Society of Paediatric and Neonatal Critical Care (ESPNIC), leading on the agenda regarding pain, sedation, drug withdrawal and Delirium across Europe. I am on the expert panel for the PADIS guideline group who are developing guidelines for pain, sedation, drug withdrawal and delirium. This work directly impacts patient care. I am passionate about nurse-led Research championing curiosity, confidence and capability among children’s nurses and allied health professionals. My ambition is to inspire others to see research not as an add on but as a powerful tool to transforming care.
I have led and developed numerous clinical trials from phases I – IV (CATCH, CONNECT, Battens BIOMARIN, FIBCON, NAVABronch), and worked across multiple paediatric studies in the cardiac and metabolic specialities. My experience extends to influential positions where I undertake advisory roles for two large PIC studies (CATCH, CONNECT), as part of these I have developed multiple strategies for trial implementation and supported work regarding deferred consent/ recruitment without prior consent in children.
I am a Senior Lecturer in the Children’s Nursing Department at London South Bank University where I have the privilege of teaching the next generation of nurses (pre- registration and post registration). My teaching spans both undergraduate and post graduate programmes covering subjects such as clinical nursing skills, anatomy and physiology, research methods and implementation and pain assessment and management.
Beyond the classroom environment my citizenship extends to being an active member of the Ageing Acute and Long-term Conditions Research Group. I also lead a bi-monthly research group within my department- a safe space I designed to support colleagues completing masters, and PhD programmes and to stimulate ideas and build a vibrant culture of educational and clinical research that’s benefits students and staff. I am an Associate Editor for the Journal of Child Health Care and I sit on the International review board for Nursing in Critical Care journal.
At the heart of my work as a clinical academic within children’s nursing is conducting research, that is safe, ethical and robust for patient benefit.
My current programme of work builds on my doctoral studies and is focussed on evaluating a mode of ventilation, Neurally Adjusted Ventilatory Assist in Children which can transform practice and improve health outcomes for children and their families.
Admissions lead for Children's Nursing - responsible for new students recruitment involving interviews, open days and outreach activities.
