Personal profile

Overview

I joined LSBU as a part-time (0.6) Senior Lecturer in Midwifery in October 2021. I am cohort leader for our new Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery, which started in January 2022. In addition, I teach across the three-year Pre-registration Midwifery Programme, helping to develop and deliver material from the recently NMC validated new curriculum. My previous experience in midwifery has mostly been within the NHS, latterly as part of the Maternity Education Team at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.

Research Interests

I completed my Post Graduate Certificate in Health and Social Care Education in 2017 and worked initially as a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Brighton before completing a year’s secondment there in 2019-2020. I returned to work clinically as a labour ward midwife during the pandemic at Brighton and Haywards Heath where I still hold a bank contract.
My teaching at the NHS involved developing and delivering mandatory obstetric emergency training for multidisciplinary teams of midwives, obstetricians, anaesthetists, neonatal and support staff. I was proud to be part of a dynamic education team, introducing real-time simulation training using both mannequins and live actors (often student midwives!) for skills drills. I worked with the Consultant Midwife to develop and incorporate Human Factors training, a topic I remain very passionate about and am keen to assimilate across my teaching.
I am a Newborn Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) Qualified Practitioner, and have developed and continue to work on an in-house programme for the training of qualified staff (midwives and neonatal nurses) at UHS NHS Trust. It is pleasing that this aspect of maternity care is now incorporated into the new midwifery curriculum at LSBU and I take an active role in this.
Supporting breastfeeding is a critical aspect of midwifery, and as a qualified frenulotomist I continue to support an NHS tongue-tie assessment and division clinic.
My clinical roles in midwifery have encompassed both hospital and community settings, having worked as rotational midwife, birthcentre midwife and labour ward co-ordinator. I then moved into a specialist role supporting Vaginal Birth After Caesarean (VBAC Lead) after which I moved into an educational role as Workforce Development Midwife.
Prior to my midwifery career I worked in publishing in editorial roles in training packages.
