Personal profile

Overview

I'm a senior lecturer in Acoustics & Building Services Engineering. I first joined LSBU as a student of the MSc in Environmental & Architectural Acoustics after having worked at Dyson for over three years as a research & development acoustic engineer.Prior to Dyson, I completed the course that I have been leading for the last ten years at LSBU: the Institute of Acoustics (IOA) Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control. After graduating from the MSc, I rejoined LSBU to work as a Knowledge Transfer Partnership associate for a project involving the acoustic design & optimisation of Voice Alarm systems in several London Underground lines

Research Interests

Past research include:
I conducted noise emissions reduction research and development home appliances as an acoustics engineer at Dyson.
I completed my PhD research on the Design and optimisation of VA systems in underground railway stations. I won the Institute of Acoustics (IOA) Peter Barnett Student award 2013 for PhD research work. The PhD work included investigation into improving the design and simulation performance of underground stations' VA systems under emergency situations. It aimed at improving public safety in underground transportation. I have been promoting the creation of a British Standard to provide dedicated guidance on the electro acoustic design and testing of VA systems in underground railways stations.
I have conducted research into the Potential hazard consequences to personnel exposed to the ignition of small volumes of weakly confined stoichiometric hydrogen/air mixture
I have conducted research on the noise impact from the London Heliport operation and I am an advisory member of the London Heliport Consultative Group.
I have undertaken research into the potential introduction of basic acoustic education into the performance music curriculum and I have been promoting for this introduction to be implemented.
More recent research work includes the conceptual development of an optimised practical and efficient acoustic device to improve acoustic measurements and simulations in indoor spaces as well as
research into the technical and practical suitability of sound sources used in room acoustics measurements.
I promote and have started research into the introduction of basic acoustics education in the Undergraduate and Post-graduate Architecture training.
I have authored and co-authored over 40 publications in scientific journals and conference proceeding on acoustics topics. I am reviewer of the following peer reviewed scientific journals: Acoustics (MDPI), Heliyon, Applied Acoustics, Scientific reports (Springer Nature), Discover Analytics (Springer Nature),Building Acoustics, Build and Environment and Noise Control Engineering Journal.
I'm director of studies of one PhD programme aiming at determining the acoustic characterictics of alternative ventilation ducts and second supervisor of another PhD programme aiming at developing a metric to determine the speech sound quality of lecture capture recordings. I am external examiner for MSc Applied Acoustics at University of Derby (UK) and external assessor for a post-graduate postgramme at British University in Egypt.
I am a fellow member of the IOA and member of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA). I sit at the IOA Institute of Acoustics education and London Branch committees
