Research interests

My particular research interest is patient safety. Mitigating or reducing patient harm from medical care in developing countries and particularly in Sub-Sahara African public hospitals to ensure that healthcare is balm to human suffering and not a contributor to it. Harm from medical care poses a substantial burden in terms of morbidity and mortality on people around the world. However, the evidence base has been created in the developed nations, although there is some epidemiological evidence of poor clinical outcomes due to unsafe medical care and practices in developing countries and those with economies in transition, the information on structural and process factors that contribute to unsafe medical care derived almost entirely from a small number of developed countries. Their applicability to other countries is not known.
Understanding the causes, frequency and harm of adverse events in developing countries, and the underlying process of care that constitute barriers to better or adequate patient safety and better quality of care are integral to my applied research.
