My main research interest is to develop novel infrared and electronic sensing technologies for skin measurements and industrial Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). With funding from EPSRC (GR/M56722/01), Royal Society, and various industries, work has been done on skin hydration and hydration depth profiling, skin thickness, skin pigments, transdermal drug delivery, membrane permeation, nail and hair measurements, instrument performances and thermal diffusivity effects, by using photo-thermal radiometry technology. I also worked on skin Trans-Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) measurements and capacitive imaging based on Fingerprint sensors.
To date, I have successfully supervised 17 PhD students, got 2 UK patent applications, and got over £1M research generated incomes. I have published more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. I have also published four books (three with world renowned publisher Wiley). I am a grant proposal reviewer for BBSRC and EPSRC, book proposal reviewer for Pearson, an editorial committee member of the new Cosmetics open-access journal, a journal reviewer for more than 10 journals, including the prestige Journal of Biomedical Optics, International Journal of Pharmaceutics and Physiology, International Journal of Cosmetic Science, IEEE Access and so on.
I have contributed to REF (Research Excellent Framework) 2004, 2008, 2014 and 2021). My research has been featured as a research impact case study in REF 2014.
I am also a Director and Co-founder of Biox Systems Ltd (https://www.bioxsystems.com/), a university spin-out company, which designs and manufactures a patented, novel, condenser-chamber TEWL measurement technique - AquaFlux©, and capacitive image instrument - Epsilon. AquaFlux and Epsilon have been used in over 200 organizations worldwide, including universities, hospitals and leading international cosmetic companies such as Unilever, P&G, and L'Oreal, Johnson & Johnson, GSK, Boots, Colgate-Palmolive and Pfizer, etc.
Apart from research, I also teach at both UG and PG levels, I have set up three new courses in the past and now is the course director of Master of Research (MRes) in General Engineering. I have also create LSBU Cisco Academy back in 2009 together with my colleagues Zhanfang Zhao and Vicent Siao.
