Ms Sarah Esegbona-Adeigbe

Personal profile

Overview

I am an associate professor in midwifery and the course leader for the postgraduate midwifery programme at London South Bank University and lead modules on additional care and complexity in childbirth. I have worked as a nurse and midwife for over 30 years in the UK and the USA and volunteered in Africa. I have a passion and particular interest in ethnic minority health due to my black African background and the racial inequalities experienced by women in the UK. My last clinical role was as a fetal medicine specialist midwife and lead midwife for women with haemoglobinopathies.

Research interests

I am currently undertaking a PhD at the University of Hertfordshire exploring the perceptions of Nigerian women and midwives of cultural competency in antenatal care.
I have published peer reviewed papers on cultural safety and competency in maternity care and ethnic minority health during pregnancy and published my first book on Transcultural Midwifery Practice in 2022.
I am a committee panel member of the Maternity and Midwifery forum involved in advising on educational content on this platform. I was previously a Midwifery Forum Steering group committee member at the Royal College of Nursing, advising and contributing to guidance and policy relevant to midwifery practice. I also sat as a NMC fitness to practice panelist for eight years investigating allegations of fitness to practice, reviewing interim orders, and fraudulent entries.
