Personal profile

Overview

My expertise is in precision processing of “difficult to cut materials”. This include their shaping and finishing by both subtractive and additive methods. I use a myriad of techniques to achieve this and it includes micromachining, surface coatings, texturing, surface metrology, mechanical characterisation and modelling activities. By doing so, I aim to create high-quality reciprocal “digital twins” of all these micro/nano scale processes. I am also researching and developing hybrid and sequential manufacturing techniques (laser/ultrasonics). Most recently, I am collaborating with NHS at Milton Keynes hospital to address a global challenge about bacterial infection of medical implants.

Research Interests

I am a Professor of Manufacturing at London South Bank University (LSBU). My research at the confluent of experiments and modelling aim to generate better STEM professionals and to deploy the use of science for the benefit of society. I started working towards this mission by supporting the Centre of Doctoral Training in Ultra-Precision (EP/K503241/1 and EP/L016567/1) at my previous job together with the University of Cambridge. I am also determined to address social issues such as gender bias for which I've been successful in securing various projects from the Royal Academy of Engineering (IAPP18-19\295 and TSP 1332)).

In terms of my scientific contributions. I've co-secured Newton Fellowship and International Cost Share Award from the Royal Society (NIF\R1\191571). I also made contributions to the fight against COVID-19 for which I secured an Engineering Pandemic preparedness award from the Royal Academy of Engineering and developed COVID-19 resistant biosafe surfaces (EXPP2021\1\277).

My mainstream products of research comes in written and documented form as scientific publications and Invited keynote talks. To date, I have published about 200 Journal papers with >6500 citations (Google scholar). This has helped me maintain the ranking in the Top 2% scientist of the world for the past 5 consecutive years. My modelling activities have been into limelight at the National level as it got selected in the Video competition (Gallery 2018) of the UK’s national supercomputer ARCHER (http://www.archer.ac.uk/about-archer/news-events/events/image-comp/gallery-2018/).
