Mrs Sonia Kirby

I am a Registered Nurse Educator with an extensive background in Community Nursing, having qualified and practised as a District Nurse Sister and Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN). My early clinical career was firmly rooted in delivering high-quality, person-centred care within community settings, with a strong emphasis on long-term condition management, health promotion, and preventative care across diverse populations.

In 2004, I successfully completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education, which marked a pivotal transition in my professional journey towards education and leadership. Alongside my academic development, I progressed into senior service leadership as a Modern Matron in 2005, where I held strategic responsibility for the management and operational delivery of community district nursing services. This role involved clinical governance, workforce development, quality improvement, and multidisciplinary collaboration to ensure safe, effective, and responsive community care.

In 2006, I joined London South Bank University (LSBU) as a Senior Lecturer within the Adult Nursing Department, bringing with me a strong synthesis of clinical expertise, educational practice, and managerial leadership. Since joining LSBU, I have undertaken a range of academic leadership roles, including Link Lecturer for North East London Foundation Trust, Cohort Leader, and Course Lead for the Havering campus. These roles have enabled me to contribute to curriculum development, student support and progression, practice learning partnerships, and quality assurance processes across both university and practice settings.

I teach across a broad range of modules within pre-registration nursing programmes, supporting students to develop the knowledge, skills, and professional values required for contemporary nursing practice. My principal areas of expertise include Clinical Skills, Public Health, and Health Promotion, with a particular focus on preparing students to deliver compassionate, evidence-based care in community and primary care environments. I am especially committed to bridging the theory–practice gap and fostering students’ confidence, clinical competence, and professional identity.

My educational practice is underpinned by a strong commitment to student-centred learning, inclusivity, and the development of safe, reflective, and resilient practitioners. I continue to draw on my substantial clinical and leadership experience to inform teaching, assessment, and curriculum innovation, ensuring that educational delivery remains relevant to the evolving demands of healthcare and aligned with professional and regulatory standards.

As a nurse educator with extensive community/primary care expertise I can directly supporting the NHS Long Term Plan’s (2005) ambition to build a sustainable, skilled workforce capable of delivering care closer to home. Through practice‑focused teaching and my role as a Link Lecturer, I can strengthen education–practice partnerships that are central to integrated care systems. This approach prepares student nurses for contemporary community and integrated care roles, equipping them with the leadership capability, clinical competence, and preventative focus required to meet the evolving health needs of communities and support the long‑term sustainability of the NHS.

I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. My Masters is in Higher Education. I have also co-authored a book chapter 5: Professional Skills for Adult Nursing part 2, title of the book, Introduction to Nursing for First Year Students in 2019.
