Mr Stavros Dimitriou

Personal profile

Overview

I am the Deputy Head of the Division of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Course Leader for all undergraduate and postgraduate programs. I am a Senior Lecturer and currently teach Discrete Mathematics, Data Structures and Algorithms, Embedded Systems and the IoT, Cybersecurity and Cryptography.
I have achieved success in leadership and administration, including leading IET Accreditation, managing curriculum development, course validation, and timetable development. I champion assessment and feedback, contribute to Athena Swan and EDI initiatives, support the Achieve program, and enhance the student experience. My commitment is to deliver high-quality education and promote an inclusive academic environment.

Research Interests

I am a Senior Lecturer in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with over 23 years of experience in higher education. I specialise in delivering high-quality teaching across electronics, computing, computer programming, networks, and communications, underpinned by a strong passion for mathematics and applied physics. I have developed a keen interest in creating educational resources and material. I strive to create a stimulating learning environment that develops critical thinking and a love for learning, while emphasizing clear communication and practical application of knowledge to prepare students for success.
While my current focus is on educational leadership, my research interests encompass broadband communication networks, electronic circuits, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and smart IoT devices. During the 2000s, I secured significant European grants for research on DSL transformers, filters, and fractals, which advanced high-speed data transmission. This work led to the development of new DSL line interface transformers and innovative filter designs based on mathematical structures, as well as several national and international patents. Notable projects include the FP5 EU Craft Programme (DIGISLI), the FP6 EU Craft Programme (FIDEMAS), and the Emerald project. The research outcomes have provided substantial innovation improvements and impact in high-speed data transmission technologies.
Beyond research, I play a critical role in shaping the Electrical and Electronic Engineering curriculum, ensuring it remains current and aligned with industry needs. Representing the school of engineering, I have contributed to various University projects, including the LEAP salesforce Project as a change Agent, the generation of university generic marking criteria and the undergraduate Level of Achievement Indicators. I was the lead of business analytics efforts focused on student progression and retention and contributed to student experience committees. I have successfully led IET Accreditation of engineering courses, managed curriculum development and coordinated courses validation. I have also authored course specifications and initiated and created several new modules. I continue to lead in these areas, ensuring the ongoing enhancement and effective leadership of the academic programmes.
I contribute to personal tutoring, to NSS improvement initiatives and champion fine assessment and feedback criteria. My responsibilities also include leading and supporting key initiatives such as enhancing students' employability, course marketing and recruitment, course development planning, and I oversee apprenticeship programs. I lead the development of exam requirements and staff/student timetables and have contributed to the university’s academic workload model project. Additionally, I have taken significant initiatives to promote EDI in electrical and electronic engineering.
