Personal profile

Overview

I received BEng of Civil/Environmental Engineering, MSc. of Science in Environmental Management, and Ph.D of Environmental Engineering. I spent several years as an environmental engineer in engineering industry before I began Ph.D
After gaining my PhD, I worked as Senior Research Scientist (level 2), GNS Science (Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences), New Zealand from 1999 to 2009. I joined Civil Engineering Division, London South Bank University in 2009. I have more than 27 years experience as both an academic researcher and practical engineer with an extensive experience in water resources modelling, water pollution modelling, artificial intelligence for water resources.

Research Interests

Main research interests:
1. Water resources system modelling
2. Water pollution modelling
3. Hydro-informatics and enviro-informatics using computational intelligence
4. Groundwater and subsurface system modelling
Engineering design of engineered treatment systems (water/wastewater treatment process)
5. Integrated environmental system modelling with socio-economics to provide solutions to complex water and environmental problems
Current research projects:
1. Artificial Intelligence technology for water and environmental systems (Hydro-informatics and Enviro-informatics): 1) evolutionary model induction system; 2) dynamic neuro-fuzzy local modelling system; 3) dynamic nonlinear state-space with a neural network; 4) Bayesian intelligence modelling technique with Chonnam National University, Republic of Korea
2. Rainfall recharge estimation incorporating uncertainty based on nonlinear Monte-Carlo filtering technique in the dynamic nonlinear state-space formulation with Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences, New Zealand
3. Development of on-line, real-time hydrological modelling system with real-time data using an adaptive neutral network with an online learning algorithm with Korea Rural Research Institute, Republic of Korea
4. Artificial intelligence technology for the development and practical implementation of optimal operation and adaptive control system for a wastewater treatment process with Chungbuk National University, Republic of Korea
