Abstract
The French Flag Nursing Corps (FFNC) was a small organisation of trained British, Irish and Commonwealth nurses who
worked not for the British military during the First World War but within the French army. The organisation can be seen as two things. Firstly, it was internationalist in outlook, seeing nursing as being above national boundaries and acting
out an obligation to help France in its hour of need.
Secondly the Corps can be seen as a means of demonstrating to the French, and probably also to the British, how effective
nursing can be when practiced by a workforce whose members are all fully trained experts.
