Abstract
The objectives of the research are to examine collaboration between two important elements of civil society: civil society organizations (CSOs) and trade unions, and to develop guidelines for effective collaboration between them. The research therefore contributes to debates about the renewal of civil society and of these two key elements of it.
Fourteen initial pilot interviews were held with expert witnesses in the two sectors. Data on collaboration was then collected via i) a survey 50 CSOs and 34 trade unions ii) 22 in depth interviews on specific cases of collaboration.
In the survey data 21 CSOS and 25 Trade Unions provided examples of collaboration with organizations from the other sector. The findings revealed a range of collaborations in the following broad categories: Campaigning/advocacy; Service provision (advice, support, helplines); Knowledge (research activity, sharing expertise); Organizational (training, resources); Client access.
Data from the in-depth interviews and feedback from a webinar with respondents were used to generate fifteen guidelines for effective collaboration.
