Hello World!

Hello World programs have a long history in computing, and are typically used to introduce programming languages to beginners, and ensure things are running as they should be. Readers understand the line print("hello world") quite literally as it is written in "natural" language, and the computer executes what it is told to do, printing a text through an "instruction." The programmer learns to express themselves in a new language as if speaking for the first time, hence the seemingly naïve mode of address, announcing themselves to the world, by saying hello. The project plays on this communicative act, looping Hello World programs written in different programming languages with diverse human languages, combining them into a real-time, multilingual, machine-generated confusion of tongues.

This version is made for the New Art Foundation opening exhibition (October 2025) by noNames.
