Abstract
Dietary intake during pregnancy, breastfeeding and an infant's first year of life plays a crucial role in the development of the immune system and development/prevention of allergic disease. Maternal dietary avoidance of the major allergenic foods is not recommended, apart from peanuts, which mothers from high risk families may wish to avoid. Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for six months, but at least four months. Should a mother wish not to breastfeed or have problems with breastmilk supply, advice should be provided regarding the use of a hydrolysed formula in high risk families.
