Abstract

What are emotions? Why do we sometimes find our normal, rational selves are suddenly taken over when we feel angry or sad? What motivates our physical and verbal behaviour? What factors decide our plan of action? This chapter will introduce how psychology frames the key characteristics of emotion and motivation, their interaction and importance to our well-being. Since emotions are essentially reactions to or about something, we will explore emotion expression and regulation and how they arise by examining their underpinning neural mechanisms and how they decoded. Finally, we will discuss the physical, psychological and social factors that are related to motivation, and the theories that attempt to conceptualise motivational studies.
