Abstract

This paper presents a Cross-Layer scheme that tries to improve the performance of real-time traffic over TCP in 802.11e wireless networks. It is based on a well-known TCP-friendly, binomial algorithm at the Transport layer, which is jointly configured with the 802.11e protocol at the MAC layer. TCP-friendly schemes have shown to improve the quality of media transfer over wired and wireless networks. Furthermore, 802.11e provides the ability to configure its parameters for the transmission of media in a more efficient way. Particularly it allows prioritization according to the specific requirements of each traffic type. This work examines a cooperation between the transport and the MAC layer. The goal is to jointly configure the binomial parameters of the TCP-friendly and those of the 802.11e, to further enhance the performance and the quality of real-time traffic over such networks.
