Abstract

One of the leading commodities of Indonesian farmers which plays a role in increasing Indonesia's economic growth which can improve the welfare of society is the coffee plant. In coffee commodities, coffee beans are usually traded, while coffee skins, which constitute 40-45% of the fruit, become organic waste that can damage the environment. This waste needs to be used as a zero waste practice to support a green economy. Eco-dye is a method used to take color from nature. Eco-dye can be a solution for using coffee cherry skin waste as a natural dye. The aim of this research is to research how coffee skin waste can be used as an organic dye in recycled paper. This research method uses experimental methods and analyzes using descriptive qualitative methods. In the process of making recycled paper, natural dyes are added from the processing of coffee cherry skin waste. This research uses coffee cherry skin from robusta and arabica coffee types which are popular in Indonesia. The dye composition in recycled paper was varied to test the color results of each experimental treatment. The research results show that coffee husk waste is successfully used as an organic dye in recycled paper. The results of this research can provide a practical alternative for the MSME industry to utilize coffee husk waste as an environmentally friendly natural dye.
