Policing in Crisis? Policing and Resistance in 21st Century Britain

Research output: Book/ReportBook

Abstract

This book offers a timely critical contribution to current debates on police and policing in the UK and wider mobilisations against police violence and misconduct. Drawing upon critical scholarship on the topic, it engages with both longstanding and more recent concerns about police and policing, explored through the notion of ‘crisis’. ‘Crisis’, often used to frame ‘scandals’ and calls for police reform, runs through the contributions to this volume, bringing together academics and community activists, through case studies, analyses and accounts. This book therefore provides an important resource whereby multiple narratives are presented and aim to challenge stereotypes, forms of discrimination, and normalised practices that have enabled the legitimation of problematic policing for decades. The book is organised into three parts: Policing and Communities; Policing and Protest; Policing and Gender; to give visibility to sites and spaces of police violence and harm, as well as to opportunities for resistance that arise.
