Abstract

Rapidly increasing energy costs have laid greater emphasis on energy efficiency issues in refrigeration. Due to uncertainties surrounding the long-term sustainability of hydrofluorocarbons (HFC), many companies have begun looking at alternative refrigeration options. TNO in the Netherlands has recently launched their 'Sustainable Cooling Initiative' to bring together and showcase sustainable refrigeration technologies. Technologies such as solar energy, ground source cooling, radiative cooling, heat pipes and thermosyphons are all 'free' sources of cooling that could be developed.
