Abstract
Although existing literature points to the importance of developing shared norms in virtual work and there is some work on norms within online communities, there is little research focusing specifically on how different types of norms operate within virtual work environments. Because differences in expectations across locations can result in increased conflict and reduced motivation and can hamper cooperation and performance within virtual environments, we chose to address this gap in current research and to edit a special issue on the topic.
