Abstract
Current research mainly explores the benefits of mobility from a human capital lens: knowledge production and transfer, research productivity, competitive workforce, economic benefits. There is no sufficient empirical evidence about people´s broader individual, social and intercultural international experiences. This paper presents an alternative theoretical framework using the capabilities approach and transformative learning theory concepts exploring individual experiences, capabilities developed and association with social change. This framework is useful for the evaluation of long-term outcomes of outward mobility programmes in particular contexts focusing on individual beneficiaries and diverse ways of contributing to societies
